Word & Character Counter is a free, single-page writing helper. Paste or type your text and it instantly reports word count, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, estimated reading and speaking time, plus a keyword density table that ignores common English stopwords.

How it works

• Everything runs in your browser with plain JavaScript — there is no backend, no login and no tracking of your text.
• Counts refresh live as you type; there is nothing to submit.
• The whole app is a single HTML file, so it even works offline once loaded.
• Your theme preference and cookie choice are stored only in your own browser’s local storage.

How the numbers are calculated

• Words — groups of letters and numbers separated by spaces or punctuation, so “don’t” and “well-known” count as one word each.
• Sentences — marked by full stops, question marks, exclamation marks and line breaks.
• Paragraphs — non-empty lines; blank lines and trailing whitespace never inflate the totals.
• Reading time — 200 words per minute. Speaking time — 130 words per minute.
• Keyword density — share of all words, after removing a built-in list of ~150 English stopwords.
